Our Roots

Urban living communities

Starting in Hackney, we began working with inner-city women living in an area with a high multiple-deprivation indices score. We recognised there was a high burden on local health services because there was under-investment in community led health provision. Our courses are designed to empower local women to take the lead on their health and wellbeing as early as possible.

Our Target Group

Underactive Women

We focus on working with women and communities of women who are typically under-active. We know the barriers women face to starting and staying active and we work closely with women from the local community to design and implement locally-relevant women-focused active interventions.

Affected Communities

Women of Colour

Being an organisation led by women of colour, we understand that culture plays a role in our physical activity. Our courses are designed by women of colour, taking into consideration the impact of cultural practices and norms on getting more women leading happier and healthier lifestyles.

Our Niche

Strength Building Exercise

The relationship between mental and physical strength is symbiotic. We support women to build brain-body resilience through strength-based exercises like weightlifting. Strength-focused exercises are accessible to all, relevant and useful for all and have immediate and long-term health benefits for all.

Reducing barriers

The socio-economics of exercise

The most common barriers to movement and wellness are financial and time related. We create low-barrier and no-barrier holistic courses that eliminate financial concerns from immediate and long-term engagement. Our courses are set up to give women the skills needed for them to engage in movement and wellness practices independently.

Legacy and Sustainability

Skills, Knowledge & Confidence

Each course is designed with the awareness that STUK CIC cannot reach everyone and has limited resources. We focus on building the skills, knowledge and confidence over short-medium term interventions, that support women looking to change or modify lifestyle habits. We encourage and support increased activity outside of STUK CIC courses, but also provide sustainable collective community support systems for women to engage with along the way.

Holistic Health

The Brain & The Body

Our approach to health is innovative and acknowledges the need for simultaneous mental and physical health interventions. All of our courses focus on the health of the body and the mind through developing women's knowledge of physical movement, nutrition, sleep, breathing, environment and therapeutic practice.

Freedom From Harm

Addressing The Impact Of Trauma & Abuse

We are aware that mental health issues are a leading cause of illness in the UK and are more likely to affect the groups of women we work with. Our courses are designed to support women dealing with mental health issues by building up physical and mental resilience, supporting nutritional shifts that improve brain-body functioning, provide community based support, decrease isolation and provide a easy-to-access therapeutic space with qualified mental health practitioners.
